Lure Coursing

The club organises training and competitions in lure coursing. Lure coursing allows you to exercise your dog's natural instincts in a controlled and safe environment. It is a great way to provide your dog with physical and mental stimulation, as well as strengthen the bond between dog and owner.

Lure Coursing for beginners

Where to start: It is important for a coursing dog to be psychologically and physically prepared. What does psychological mean in this case? A dog that has never had the opportunity to run freely, without a leash, who has been constantly pulled, recalled, kept at a short distance from the owner, will have a hard time overcoming the psychological barrier that now "it is allowed". Greyhound breeds move quickly and move away from the owner 100/200 meters in the sense of a greyhound is "right next to it", many people are scared of it. For a dog that is being prepared for coursing, communication with other dogs, especially other greyhounds, is very important. If the dog is not used to running with other dogs, this can cause problems when starting in pairs. Dogs that live in a larger pack that has its own hierarchy have the opposite problems, they are often not sure of themselves, without a "support team" they are afraid to make decisions. Psychological preparation is important so that instincts and excitement can manifest themselves. Without the desire to run, physical fitness alone is of no use. Passion and instincts are innate, some have more, some less, but the owner can encourage the dog's desire to run from puppyhood. Physical fitness is the second most important. Coursing is a sport, with all that it entails, and physical fitness is strength, endurance and condition (not too fat, not too weak), with good muscle mass and tone. All this can be achieved by choosing good quality and balanced food, as well as appropriate physical activity. Maintaining optimal physical fitness for a young dog is relatively easier. With age, it becomes more difficult and requires more work from the owner, but it is necessary for the dog to run successfully and without injuries even at the age of six and more. There is no single recipe for achieving good physical fitness for a dog and everyone is looking for the most suitable ways for themselves, whether it be running next to a bicycle, long walks at a fast pace, a treadmill, etc. Often, contradictions arise among show dog owners, because good physical shape for a show dog is very different from athletic shape, in which case you should try to find a middle ground. Training and competitions: The first coursing training is very important. As much as possible, the first training and competitions should be provided so as not to create unpleasant associations for the dog, such as falls, aggression from other dogs, etc. Running should be started very gradually, the first time it should be run alone, without a partner, without a muzzle and a cape. The most common mistake for beginners is to rush too much and put the dog on a license in the first run. At first, you should make sure that the dog has the excitement and desire to run, then you can get a license, because a muzzle and a cape can be distracting factors if the dog does not have enough excitement or appropriate physical training. A new dog needs training to understand the "rules of the game", however, in the first season it should not be overloaded with training and competitions, it is better to have a little too little than too much. For an experienced dog, training is generally not necessary if the competition schedule is tight, general physical fitness is enough. If a dog that has run no longer runs at all, does not finish the course or starts to "turn" the course, it is usually a sign of a lack of excitement or problems with physical fitness. Dogs understand perfectly well that coursing is not hunting, it is not "for real", and if they do run, it is because it is a thrill. Other things: An important thing is also nutrition. Ideally, balanced refreshment would be, but if this is not possible, then definitely dry food of good composition. A dog that is fed unbalanced or with low-quality dry food will never be able to get in good physical shape and be durable. It is also important to remember about doping. In major competitions, this is controlled and it is important to check the composition of the food, the treats given to the dog, and especially the food additives and medications.
